When Gigi Hadid hosted the 2016 American Music Awards on Sunday night with former "Saturday Night Live" cast member Jay Pharoah, she tried her hand at comedy with an impression of Melania Trump. The model imitated the soon-to-be FLOTUS's accent and poked fun at her 2016 Republican National Convention speech, for which she was accused of plagiarizing a previous speech by Michelle Obama.

Because it's 2016, Hadid's bit came with lots of social media backlash, to which she responded with a handwritten note on Twitter on Monday night. "I removed or changed anything in the script that I felt took the joke too far, and whether or not you choose to see it, what remained was done in good humor and with no bad intent," wrote Hadid.

The model brought up her own experience of being the "center of a nationally televised comedy skit that poked fun at my actions," most likely referencing her appearance on a "South Park" episode, "and was able to find the humor in it." She does have a point. Hadid performed what was quite possibly the tamest jab at Mrs. Trump we've seen. Have you been watching late night television lately?

"I believe Melania understands show business and the way shows are written and run," continued Hadid. "I apologize to anyone that I offended and have only the best wishes for our country."
