MICHELLE OBAMA'S HALLOWEEN COSTUME WAS AN AUTUMNAL 3.1 PHILLIP LIM SWEATER

By now, you may have seen the video footage of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama dancing to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" at the White House's annual Halloween party on Monday. That's some good stuff, right? And while the First Lady wasn't exactly wearing a single sparkly glove or wide-brimmed fedora — King of Pop style — her outfit was easily among the best of all the event's attendees, and that was without a costume.

To distribute (probably vegan, sugar-free) candy to area children, some of whom came cheekily dressed as lame ducks, the First Lady wore an autumnal 3.1 Phillip Lim sweater with mixed patterns and long ribbed sleeves. The deep chartreuse coloring (which is officially listed as "dark sulfur") looked pretty with her complexion, while the asymmetric carwash hem gave the piece that signature FLOTUS flair. As an added bonus, interested parties can still purchase the sweater for $650 at Neiman Marcus. Obama kept it casual with black skinny jeans, ankle boots and gold hoop earrings — three items you, too, probably have in your closet. (She's so relatable!)

Meanwhile, President Obama dressed like my dad does for every semi-casual occasion: jeans, a button-down and a crewneck sweater, with nondescript dress shoes of some kind.

Next year, when the Obamas have moved out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, maybe we can expect them to dress up for real. (Shall I make a Kickstarter for FLOTUS as Beyoncé, circa the 2014 VMAs?) In the meantime, though, this is a pretty great compromise.
